Moths and butterflies are attracted to the large numbers of night-scented plants that flower at this time of year. We planted some night-scented stock in the garden in spring and the perfume is now filling the back garden. I am also particularly fond of honeysuckle and again we are lucky enough to have lots of wild ones growing in a nearby hedge. The increase in night time flying insects bring out the bats in the evenings, do not get too alarmed if they fly over your heads as they are going for insects not your jugular (or your hair)!
July is generally a very warm month, usually with prolonged spells of hot weather. This can mean drought conditions for worm-loving animals and birds that find it difficult to find food in the hard ground. At this time many birds molt a new coat of feathers ready for the winter months ahead so they need regular baths. Here are a few tips for keeping the wildlife in your garden happy.
o Top up and clean out water for birds. Provide water for mammals.
o Use water out of a rain water butt for planters and hanging baskets.
o Top up the pond.
Horticultural.
