BUTTERFLIES IN SWAN PARK

SWAN PARK

If you go down to Swan Park today, you are sure of a big surprise. There are some colourful additions to the fabulous butterfly garden in the shape of a giant painted butterfly and bumble bee for you to stick your head in and have a photograph taken. George and Cyril, Buncrana’s two hard working town gardeners have also added plenty of information about the types of butterflies that inhabit the park, so it is well worth a visit.

Swan Park is steeped in history and is a major attraction with tourists who walk to see the river and riverside walk and coastal walk as well as the the Keep, which is thought to have originally been a 14th century Norman castle. The river is home to some large salmon too and the local fisherman have had a bumper catch recently with all of the rain we have had.

BUTTERFLY GARDEN
August is one of the busiest months for butterflies and not surprisingly the plants are at their most colourful to ensure that the buttefrlies and bees are there to pollinate them. In the butterfly garden you can see plenty of ideal plants for them to thrive. There are nettles, buddiea, hyssop, verbena, sedum spectabile, nasturtium and scabious. In addition to those plants, lavender, marjoram, mint, heliotrope, pot marigold, virginian stock, candytuft and hebe all all out in flower and would attract august butterflies. Perhaps you will spot a Red Admiral, Painted Lady or Comma butterfly when you are visiting.

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that bumble bees do not sting you? So there is no need to run around the garden trying to get away from them!

BUMPER CROP

If you were lucky enough to have planted beans and courgettes in the garden this year you will find that the weather was perfect for bumper crops. We have had so many flowers on the courgette plants that we are coating them in batter and deep frying them for a tasy treat…

Delicious!

ME AND MY MOTOR-DENIS GRANT

At some time or another most of us go though the experience of learning to drive and taking a driving test to get out on the open road. Denis Grant who runs AAA Inishowen School of Motoring in Buncrana is one of a handful of trained driving instructors that have given Buncrana the accolade of being the area with the highest pass rate in Ireland. Denis has twelve years experience as a driving instructor and is now driving a 2007 Peugeot 107. Denis can be contacted on (074) 9362090

How long have you had the car?
I got it new on the 1st of March of this year. Before this car I drove a 206 and before that a Nissan Micra.

Why did you change from Nissan?
I didn’t really like the new shape Micra’s. My lads didn’t think much to the new shape either. I did a survey by asking customers and they said the same too. There are too many curves. Nissans are still a well-made car though and their warranties are a year longer then the Peugeot.

Is the 107 reliable?
Yes. I can’t fault it.

Best thing about the car?
The manoeuvrability is fantastic and is perfect for three point turns. Visibility is very good too. The size is also ideal for a learner driver.

How often do you wash it?
I wash it at least once a week. If it is being used for a test I will clean it then too. The driving examiners like a clean car!

How long is the waiting list for taking the driving test?
It is now down to 17 weeks.

What would you do to help motorists given the chance?

Improve the road surfaces and reduce the petrol prices. I also believe that driving issues and safety should be taught at schools from an early age. I did a talk in a school in Carndonagh and allowed the students to drive the car. They were all very interested and attentive.

What would you really like to be driving around in?
A top of the range Mercedes would be great but I think it would be a bit too large to fit with dual controls and be used as an instructor’s car!

Top Tip?
Drive so your licence will expire before you do!
