Life-Jackets and a boat urgently needed in Ghana

Life Jackets and a boat with an outboard motor are urgently needed.

In the Volta region of Ghana, Lake Volta (8,800km2) is the biggest man made lake in the world. It was created by the construction of the Akosombo Dam, a hydro-electric power project.

ECM Ho in Ghana, (who have been supported for the last twelve years by Mayo-resident Noeline Haylett) has an outreach project on Dwarf Island, which is one of the many islands in the lake. Dominic Akyereke, their outreach worker who lives on the island has requested urgently, as many life jackets be sent over as possible.

Because the lake is man made and was created by flooding surrounding areas there are many dead trees under the water. The ferry boats, which are often heavily loaded sometimes hit submerged tree stumps.

Just before Christmas, the boat that Dominic was on tipped over (a regular occurrence) and 75 people were drowned. Dominic was saved as he was wearing a life jacket that had been previously sent over.

Noeline Haylett, has been supporting the work of the mission in Ghana (ECM), during which time she has sent over 4 ambulances, a tractor, a plough and transport boxes, a bus and a quad as well as building schools, clinics, a hospital and a bore hole. Her next container is going over in June and she hopes to send as many life jackets as possible and hopefully a boat with an outboard motor.

I started to help Rev. Sylvanus Botsyoe in 1996. He started the mission the year before to try and help the very poor and needy, these included women who were forced into prostitution due to poverty, aids orphans and orphans in general, people with physical and learning disabilities and also lepers. Lepers are at the bottom of the heap.

FIRST STEPS
At first he started growing vegetables, I sent him a copy of the organic training programme I had drawn up and was using in Mayo Ireland. A year later the local government official was so impressed with the results that he asked the Rev. if he would take on some street girls. The Rev. said yes and say they say “the rest is history”.



SEWING MACHINES
The poor man was expecting to get 5 or 6 girls instead he was brought a bus load of girls between the ages of 12 and 18 years. He phoned me in a very confused state not knowing what to do. I told him to do a Home Economics course. He had no clue where to begin and needless to say he had nothing to work with. This caused me to collect & send off the first of many containers, many unwanted sewing machines were put to use and this year up to 300 ladies have been trained as dressmakers. Each trained lady has to train 2 more ladies, these ladies can now earn an honest living and can also care for their children. Many rural ladies put hand sewing machine on their heads and walk from village to village getting work.



PROUD
So far 4 ambulances, 1 tractor, 1 transport box, 1 plough and a quad have been sent out, containers also contain wheelchairs, crutches, school books, medicine in date etc, other items always needed are bicycles. Children spend hours each day walking to school after having nothing to eat before they set off. Bicycles can help a great deal. The government of Ghana is very proud of the fact that Ghana has 30% bicycle ownership.



MORE IS NEEDED
We can never get enough wheelchairs. “Wheelchairs are not even manufactured in Ghana”, crutches are also invaluable. When the news of the arrival of the container reaches the bush telegraph, people from near & far come and beg for a wheelchair. People have been known to travel up to 5 miles on their bottoms and the palms of their hands to beg for help.

EDUCATION
Education is also a problem. In some places there are no schools for miles around – many schools are only huts and often the children don’t even have pencils or copy books.



To help address this problem I got a small classroom block build (at my own expense). It was intended for 60 children but within a few weeks a 110 children were crammed into it. I am at present trying to get help to build a second classroom block.



CLEAN WATER
This area, as many others has only filthy water to drink. A group of people in Kilmurray collected enough money together to sink a borehole (not a well which dries up) at 300 feet they reached cleaned water and thank God four villages who all share the borehole now have clean water for the first time ever. This eliminates the dreadful problem of “guinea worm”.

MEDICAL AND EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
Medical & Educational needs are very high as is transport. Getting people to help themselves is very necessary therefore small projects like sewing, gardening etc. are great, but they need to be in good health and educated to do so.

We always need money for shipping and money for boreholes.

BOREHOLES
One borehole cost €7500. That is a very good price. My father used to do boreholes in Africa and he says that is good value and he knows local prices.

SPONSOR AN ORPHAN
We also sponsor orphans to the tune of €60 per year. Anyone who takes on an orphan needs to keep payments up for a few years as once a child is in school we should not pull them out again.

CONTAINERS
At present I am trying to raise the funds to send out another container. The contents of medical and educational aid, is as usual but this container will also include a minibus. The bus will be used by the mission for its work and also as a taxi. This way they can raise funds to help keep the projects going.

AMBULANCES
I am also in dire need of 2 ambulances. They are to be located in very remote areas so that people can be taken to hospital when necessary. Last year a lady died in childbirth due to lack of transport.

The polyclinic who deal with the lepers, are always asking me to send out nurses and the schools would welcome English, Maths & Science teachers. Needless to say it would be on a voluntary basis.

TRICYCLE

This is a crippled gentleman Noeline met, who works at the leper clinic as an accountant or book-keeper. He has polio and he walks on two crutches which we had supplied earlier, but it’s a long way to go. Noeline managed to get him this wheelchair. It is like a tricycle as well and he can pedal it with his hands. These are quite rare out in Ghana –you see them a lot in India. Noeline paid 300 euro to get a second-hand one. It belonged to some-one who died. Noeline bought it and got it restored for this man.

Money rasied by Noeline has built new state of the art boreholes that are drilled by machine and can go down for two hundread feet or more. A pump is then fitted on top and all the water is clean and the water does not dry up.

Mayo Animal Wefare are most grateful for grants from the Dept. of Agriculture.

MAW do dogs and specialize in wildlife.. NOT cats....cats are only taken in as a last resort as there are groups that only do cats.....and wildlife in need of help should be seen to at once as they die from stress ...cold hunger etc ...so early reporting is very necessary.

There will be an opportunity to help by either travelling directly to the villages that she works in or you can sponsor a child for 60 euro a year so they are fed, housed educated.

50 euro goes towards their education.

This includes the books,pencils and uniform.

The ten euro goes into a fund in caes any of the childern get ill over the year and need medical attention

NOELINE RECEIVES A GRANT FROM DOA

Noeline Haylett today received a 5000 euro grant from the Department of Agriculture for Mayo Animal Wefare. "The news is fantastic" said Noeline. "I got home from work and had two stray dogs signed in for castration and a wild, 3 legged fox on the doorstep!" The news through the letterbox was great timing". She concluded.

The money will go towards cages,food, pick up of the animals and general care. At present most of the money needed to run Mayo Animal Welfare comes out of Noelines own pocket

Noeline has just received €300 from the DOA to continue her work with animals in Mayo Animal Welfare. This money is very welcome and goes towards the upkeep. Other money has to be raised through collections to keep up with the costs.....

Mayo Animal Welfare is a voluntary organisation whose members are dedicated to the welfare of animals in the County. It was established in April 1994. The work of the organisation mainly involves:



The rescue of abandoned, cruelly treated and injured animals. Caring for pets in case of sickness/death of owner. Rehoming of animals. Releasing wildlife such as swans,hares,seabirds etc. into their natural habitats after treatment for injuries. The organisation runs regular spaying/neutering discount campaigns where people receive a 40% discount of the normal spaying/neutering price. Contact the above number for more details.



We receive some funding from the Ministry or Agriculture and rely on donations and fundraising. As Mayo does not have an Animal Sanctuary members take rescued animals into their own homes and care for them at their own expense. NOELINE IN GHANA

Noeline Haylett visited Ho in Ghana this year to see where all of the goods she shipped over were being used. There is great progress with the school up and runing and fresh water from the wells. This photo was one of the most striking images that I came accross. It is a woman who sits under the canopy all day,every day, breaking rocks. QUAD BIKE

This is a picture of Sylvanus giving the quad to David. The Rev Sylvanus Botsyoe started the EC Mission in Ho, Ghana and Noeline has been working with him since 1996. David uses the quad to go into outlying areas and seeing what help is needed and delivering medicine. He can then report back to Sylvanus about infrastructure, eg if there is a road there, if the ambulance could pass. It is very useful as quads can go into the most remote places where other vehicles can't pass. There are only two quads in the whole of Ghana. Noeline got this quad from the priest that runs the boy school at Tuam.

Noeline funded the school out of her own money. The completed school was then donated to the Salvation Army who now fund the teachers.

AMBULANCE

This is the second ambulance Noeline sent out. It went to the leper hospital as they didn't have one. Twice a week they use it to go out to remote areas to do child clinics for mothers and babies etc. In Ghana when you are happy or celebrating you wave a white hanky, so they are waving their hankies as they are receiving the ambulance and their crutches and walking aids, their wheelchairs and beds and all sorts of things. In the background you can see the first ambulance that Noeline sent out to the mission. The mission hired a low bed truck to bring all this equipment to the hospital, including rubber gloves and disinfectant and all kinds of wonderful things.
