20-40-60 Rule
What we think of ourselves is vitally important to the success of any endeavour. We move forward or backwards grounded in our own estimation of self. Or at least we think we do. However, many times those judgments are not based on who we think we are, but instead fall into the category of 'who others think we are'. We all know that someone else's opinion is of little consequence in our daily lives, yet, we rely on these external views, real or imagined, to fortify our public demeanour and actions.
Much of this reaction to exterior views has to do with age and maturity which follows a basic psychological pattern sometimes referred to as the 20 - 40 - 60 rule.
At 20, your life revolves around an obsession of what others think of you.
At 40, you begin to not care what others think of you.
And at 60, you realise that when you were younger, you really weren't being judged at by anyone but yourself and no-one was thinking of you at all!
Maybe we need to all be 60.
Take a moment, no matter what your age, to be 60.

Wisdom of the World... 2 this week
As soon as he opened the church, a priest saw a woman come
in, sit in the front pew and place her head between her hands. Two hours later,
he noticed that the woman was still there, in the same position.
Concerned, he decided to approach her.
"Can I do anything for you?” he asked.
"No, thanks,” she answered. “I was already getting all
the help I needed when you interrupted me.”
Covering the Sun With One's Hand
A disciple went to Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav:
"I shall not continue with my studies of sacred
texts," he said. "I live in a small house with my brothers and
parents, and never have the ideal conditions for concentrating on that which is
important."
Nachman pointed to the sun and asked his disciple to place
his hand over his face, in order to hide it. The disciple obeyed.
"Your hand is small, yet it can completely cover the
power, light and majesty of the great sun. In the same way, the small problems
manage to give you the excuse you need in order to hinder your progress along
your spiritual journey.
Just as your hand has the power to hide the sun, mediocrity
has the power to hide your inner light. Do not blame others for your own
incompetence.”

Wisdom of the World - The Guy in the Glass
The Guy in the Glass
When you get what you want in
your struggle for self,
And the world makes you King for
a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at
yourself,
And see what that guy has to say.
For it isn't your Father, or
Mother, or Wife,
Who judgement upon you must pass.
The fellow whose verdict counts
most in your life
Is the guy staring back from the
glass.
He's the fellow to please, never
mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the
end,
And you've passed your most
dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your
friend.
You can fool the whole world down
the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you
pass,
But your final reward will be
heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the guy in the
glass.

Wisdom of the World -week 169
Co-operate
I read a statement once that best describes the attitudes of some people. It says, “I love the world. It’s the people I can’t stand”. Some people seem to derive endless pleasure by saying NO to almost anything.
I read a statement once that best describes the attitudes of some people. It says, “I love the world. It’s the people I can’t stand”. Some people seem to derive endless pleasure by saying NO to almost anything.
But such people do not go far. They may sit in committees
and boars by virtue of their seniority or them being a partner, but they hat
working as a team. When they do, they almost always want their opinion to be
accepted.
Remember, if the world is your home, its human beings you’ve
got to live with!
